Cosmopolitan Cocktail Recipes
When you have your next cocktail party, you may want to try to create the (very) popular drink called the Cosmopolitan. In many places it is nick-named Cosmo. It’s the rave at all of the clubs these days. Once you have the ingredients for it and try it, you’ll agree that it is a real crowd-pleaser because it’s delicious- even delightful. The first thing you must do is make sure you have a good recipe and chilled glasses. Chilled glasses are a very important step in the recipe and it’s required. There are a few ways people chill the glasses:
- One choice is that you can place your glass into a bag of ice cubes and use it as a portable chiller. When you are ready for the glass, just scoop it out of the ice cubes.
- The other way is to put the glasses in a freezer for a couple of minutes. Longer than that will freeze the glass and this is not what you want. If you have a small bar freezer it would be perfect, if not just use the freezer in your refrigerator. Make sure your glass is absolutely dry when you put it in the freezer. If there are any drops of water on it, it could crack so be careful.
Although the chilled glass is a requirement- it’s also a fun way to make your guests feel like they are dining out or going out for a drink. Chilled glasses are usually found in bars and high class establishments, but at home it just brings the class and intrigue of your guests.
Here is one recipe for the Cosmopolitan:
You’ll need:
- 1/4 ounce of cranberry juice
- 1 1/2 ounces of vodka
- 1 ounce of triple sec
- 1/2 ounce of fresh lime juice
The cranberry juice not only adds a beautifully refreshing touch of color to the drink- it also gives just a little of that “what was that?” taste to the drink- like a taste surprise. The triple sec can be a brand called Contreau or any other top shelf liquor. The next step is to pour all of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker, shake with ice, then strain the liquid into a large, chilled cocktail glass or a martini glass. The Cosmopolitan is served in a martini glass but don’t confuse it with a martini. This is a completely different drink. The grand finale and a touch of class is the orange peel or a wedge of lime. For an exact recipe you can check in the Bartender Guide. You will find several variations there.
There are several different ways to make the Cosmo, not just one strict version. If you can make one or two from memory, your friends will likely be very impressed. They may even offer up some suggestions to make a variation of the one you made. The beauty of this drink is that you can vary it to each persons individual tastes!
Some bartenders use less cranberry juice and include citrus flavored vodka. The original version of the recipe used a vodka citron or lemon-flavored vodka. Making the Cosmo can be a creative endeavor. Some bartenders squeeze a lime into the cocktail glass first and don’t include the lime in the mixture. Others substitute the red cranberry juice for a white cranberry juice, and then add a blue Curacao instead of triple sec. That way your Cosmo is blue in color instead of red. Then you could make some of your Cosmo’s red and some blue and have a patriotic color scheme, say for the 4th of July.
It’s hard to say what made the Cosmopolitan so popular, but some say it derived from being mentioned on HBO’s Sex and the City. Its fruity taste had to be a contributing factor, as it has not only become the cocktail to drink in clubs, but also in restaurants and of course at parties. Adding this drink to your collection, you will find your parties to be the talk of the town.
